    Personal

A premonition refers to a situation when future events are forecasted. Now I’m not a scientist or a psychologist but I think most would agree that you don’t need to be either to smell bullshit. I personally don’t believe in precognition and premonitions. Why then is there a cult-led market for “fortune-tellers?” Why are there some experiences that cannot be explained rationally? Coincidence? Forces beyond? Here’s my experience.

I had a dream last night in a doped haze. The first dream was in regards to an email I had sent earlier in the evening, before I went to sleep. The email was to my boss about not going into work. I had been quite sick earlier in the day. I also found out I had lost my wallet that was filled with cash and valuables and was not feeling up to going to work. I sent the email in to explain that I was ill and would be into work as soon as I was feeling better.

Hours later I had an experience that was more realistic than I care to admit. I awoke to check my email to see what response my boss had sent. When I opened the email it basically said I had missed too many days and the company’s bottom line was more important than my personal days, sick or whatever else. It went on to say that I was fired. When I actually woke up I had to recheck my email only to find it was just a dream.

My next dream was about, Laura, the girl I’ve been seeing off and on since I was kid basically. That dream was a little stranger. We had a phone conversation in regard to recent events. We basically agreed to drop the commitment we held to since she left to study in London. I was fine with it at the time and though I’d made peace with it. Only in this dream, we spoke on the phone and I told her I understood why things needed to be the way they were. I realized that she wasn’t in the place to make longterm commitments and I explained that there wasn’t much I could tell her that would make her see the lifestyle changes I’d made to accomodate that sort of casual relation. I went on to say that I loved her and that when she got back, I wanted to see how it went. She basically said she did as well and we got off the phone. After waking up I had to check my caller ID to make sure that conversation never took place either.

Now how does this relate to precognition or premonition you ask? My first ever dream of this nature was in 2001, not too long after Laura and I met. Irony of that is that my only experiences with this type of dreaming was in regard to her. It was during that dream that I had what some might call a precognitive experience. In the dream I had asked her to be my girlfriend but was fumbling for words in nervousness. Palms sweaty, tinkering with pockets, heart-racing, gut-wrenching, and completely unready. Everything I said came out but came out twisted and strange. She had a hard time understanding what it was I was trying to ask her and eventually I asked her out in a way she knew. She said yes. About a week later, things happened just like that. I fumbled for the words, she had no clue, and the look in her eye brought me to that deja vu moment and I recalled the dream. I never mentioned it. Until now.

A sign? Bullshit? I don’t know. I believe in my psyche. I believe in me. I believe my mind gives me warnings in different forms and advice when I least expect it. I think people try to help themselves in myserious ways as much as they sabotage their very own existences and lives. Bullshit or not, one thing is clear: My point of view about Laura isn’t as crystal as I thought and I need to be weary of missing too many more work days. Maybe I should lay off the valium/cough medicine combination before I go to sleep.

I’m a third year student doing psych, especially abnormal psych. I found your story particularly interesting, even though it’s on a smaller scale that case studies.

I figured you’d find a little insight helpful? In the psych world we generally break down precog dreams into two groups: changeable futures and fated futures. A fated future is a dream in which there is not enough information to change the future outcome.

For example Abraham Lincoln had a dream in which he was present for a funeral at the white house. He asked a soldier there who was in the casket and the soldier stated “the President.” Lincoln told his wife of the dream but they both dismissed it. Two weeks later, he gave his bodyguard the evening off and was assassinated. Had Lincoln seen the assassination, he may have been able to prevent it.

An example of a changeable future are some accounts of people who were supposed to be on the Titanic ship. The study said a few people had dreams of a disaster and forewent the trip. It’s obviously not understood if anyone else may have had the dream or feeling and died despite. Another pop-example come from the Final Destination movies.

The interesting thing from your statements is that your first precog dream, even on a small scale, did come true. You may be questioning if its still precog if you didn’t get fired, right? Here’s my question to you… Did you do anything that may have changed the outcome of your boss sending you a response email? Did she send a follow up email? Did you call after? Did she send you an email back at all? If you thought you were about to get fired, a changeable foresight might be to call and “check in,” therefore changing that outcome. It doesn’t discredit a cognitive dream. I’d be curious to know how the other outcome goes as well.

Obviously there are a lot of skeptics for this precog stuff and rightfully so. There’s no factual evidence supporting this stuff and it can be shrugged off as coincidence. Not to mention precogs are “fucked if you do, fucked if you don’t,” if its changeable it cant be proven and if its unchangeable, its coincidence.

      Hope this helps you.

      Jess,

Thanks for the comment. That’s interesting Psych stuff, I had no idea there was really a cult following in the abnormal psych world. In answer to your question: I emailed out of work with my boss. I had the dream, checked my email and never got a response. So I called in and she seemed ok. So perhaps I did change fate.

Also, now that I already know the conversation I was going to have with Laura, it would seem a little strange to now have it, so I suppose thats fated now as well. Interesting material though. Good luck with your studies.

I had a dream that my ex boyfriend was in the hospital and a few days later he was in a car accident. The dream didn’t give me enough information to prevent it and he wouldn’t have believe me anyway. Insightful post.
